Celebrating Nurse-led Innovation in Prostate Cancer Diagnosis at EAUN25
At the recent 25th International Meeting of the European Association of Urology Nurses (EAUN25), Grace Zisengwe and her team from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust were recognised for pioneering a nurse-led diagnostic model for prostate cancer at South East London Foundation Hospital. This innovative approach aligns with the NHS Long Term Plan and the Faster Diagnosis Standards (FDS), aiming to deliver faster, more efficient cancer diagnoses.
Transforming Prostate Cancer Pathways
During her abstract presentation, Grace Zisengwe captivated an audience of specialist nurses and urologists by sharing the journey and impact of developing an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)-led diagnostic service, supported by consultants. Despite early challenges, the team’s determination has led to significant improvements in both patient care and compliance with national diagnostic standards.
Measurable Impact
The nurse-led model has delivered impressive results:
- 14-day first seen rate: Improved from 80% to 92–98%
- 28-day FDS Prostate compliance: Increased from 40% to approximately 88%
- Direct-to-biopsy waiting time: Reduced from 21 days to just 3–5 days
These achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of empowering nurses to manage the full diagnostic pathway, from referral to biopsy and results, with consultant support. This mirrors similar successes seen in other NHS trusts, where nurse-led teams have doubled efficiency and enhanced patient experiences by providing timely, compassionate care.
The Power of Collaboration
The success of this model underscores the importance of management support and close collaboration between nurses and urologists. By expanding the roles of clinical nurse specialists and advanced nurse practitioners, the team has not only improved diagnostic timelines but also strengthened patient relationships and provided holistic support during a challenging time. In recognition of the team’s achievement, Grace was awarded the Second Prize for the Best Scientific Poster Presentation at EAUN25.

Recognising Team Excellence
Grace Zisengwe has emphasised that these advances are the result of a dedicated team effort. We extend our heartfelt thanks to every contributor involved in this project. Your commitment to innovation and patient-centred care is shaping the future of prostate cancer diagnosis and exemplifies the best of the NHS.
